Wish今だとEyes of Truthというバンドがいて、彼女たちのライブはとても素敵で。仲間として接してもらっていて、いつも仲良くしてもらっている感じです。結成前から知っていた人たちだったので、この4人がバンドをやるって聞いた瞬間、すごいなと思いながら見ていて。最初から本当にすごくて、VRChatでEyes of Truthに勝つバンドはいないんじゃないかって思えるくらい、ずっと見ていました。僕がこの人たちと関係を築いていいのかなって、勝手な緊張もあるんですけど、友としても、仲間としてもとても大事な関係を築かせてもらっていて、本当にありがたいなと思いながら見守っています。
Wish今年は結構多いですね。ギターでサポートしてくれている2人がいて、Samp1eさんとRuchaさんという方です。最近その3人での反応が結構いいらしくて、一緒にやり続けている感じです。ユニット名はまだ決まっていないので、今後どうなるかは僕もまだわからないんですけど。それとは別に、他の方の楽曲にギターを弾かせてもらったり、曲作りの依頼を一緒にやってくれる人も、昔に比べたら今年はかなり増えたなと思いますね。Eyes of Truthのみんなから始まった、昔からの付き合いから、どんどん繋がりが増えている感じです。
A single world, shown to him by a friend from high school, gave him back the music he had once given up. Wish works as a singer-songwriter in VRChat. We asked him about the songs he has written for stages that cross national borders, and about the philosophy behind his words.

01It started with a world a friend gave him
What first led you to start making music?
WishI had a friend from high school in real life, and he introduced me to this world called VRChat. I didn't come in intending to make music at all. But once I was here, I started to think that maybe the music I had given up on could actually happen in this place. That's how it began.
When you say you had given it up — was there some kind of setback?
WishThere were setbacks, yes. I gave it up in real life for a while, and that was when I stopped. But then I found the world of VRChat, and the moment I thought “I can do this,” the feeling I used to have came back to me.

02The people he looked up to — GACKT, and Eyes of Truth
Is there anyone at the origin of your music, or who influenced you?
WishThere's a person called Diz, who now works in a unit called Sifneos. He's a professional, and I've respected him and been strongly influenced by him for a long time. He was a very vivid presence along my own path in music. As for what made me want to play music in the first place — around 2009 there was a Japanese artist who came to Korea, GACKT. Because of GACKT I decided to learn Japanese, and from there I wanted to make music, and that's how I entered this path.
Since you started making music in VRChat, has any live show or performance stayed with you?
WishRight now there's a band called Eyes of Truth, and their shows are wonderful. They treat me as one of their own, and we've always been close. I knew all of them before the band formed, so the moment I heard those four were starting a band I watched thinking, this is going to be something. They were extraordinary from the very beginning — I kept watching them thinking there might not be a band in VRChat that could beat Eyes of Truth. I get nervous in my own head about whether I'm even allowed to build a relationship with people like them, but they've let me build something really precious, as friends and as fellow musicians, and I watch over them feeling genuinely grateful.
03The feelings he puts into his lyrics
What genres or themes do you write in?
WishLately I've been writing more rock, anime-rock and rock ballads. That's mostly what I make. I also want to take on other genres and I'm studying as I go, but it isn't easy. Hard rock, rock ballads and anime-style rock are at the centre of what I write.
In your songs, what would you most like people to listen for?
WishThe melodies I write, of course, but there are times I want people to look at what the lyrics actually say. I write the words myself, so I want them to catch the heart of it — this feeling I'm trying to get across. If I can sense what it meant to the person who received it, that makes me very happy. When there's a feeling and a message I want to deliver, that's the part I hope people will look at.

04Changing how it sounds, stage by stage
Do you write or arrange with VRChat as a venue in mind?
WishSometimes I leave a song as it is, but I do change the live sound depending on the world. When I feel like remaking a song I already have, I'll rearrange it myself and put it out again. I want to try all sorts of things — anything I feel like doing, I want to do.
05For the people who spend precious time to come
Is there anything you keep in mind when you perform live in VRChat?
WishI go and look at the stage beforehand to check how the sound carries, and I think about what clothes would suit this stage in this world. But what I think about most is how I should perform for the people who are spending their precious time to be here. I keep my focus on putting my heart into it, and on how to let my emotions come out properly.
WishI don't think I'll ever be paid for playing these shows. But time isn't something you can buy with money, and it isn't something you can get back. The people who come are spending time that matters.

06A live show is something everyone makes together
Some worlds have elaborate laser and lighting gimmicks. Are you the type to use them?
WishIf I'm allowed to use them, I basically want to. But a live show — and this goes for me too — is something you make together with everyone. My own opinion matters, but the people doing the lighting have their own feelings about it, and depending on the song they might think, ah, this isn't right. Precisely because it's a show made with everyone and not just by me, I think it comes across properly. So I say what I think while also really listening to the other person, and lately I've wanted to make shows that feel good both for the person on lights and for me on stage.
07Even for one person, he wants to give 100%
Having a living audience right in front of you — does that feel different from making music outside VRChat?
WishI really do think so. Watching the people who react, I'm always grateful, and there's a lot that makes me feel I have to work just as hard in return. I started making music in VR in 2020, and comparing then with now, a great deal has changed. At first there weren't many people like me performing from overseas, and there were times I felt a bit lonely. But now people from all sorts of countries perform in Japanese VRChat, and the audience response has grown enormously. Seeing that is what makes me want to play every show as if it were the last.
WishIn the end nothing starts unless an audience comes — that's true. But philosophically, in my case, even if there were nobody watching, I'd still want to show what I want to show and do what I want to do properly. Even if there's only one person, I want to play for that person. I've carried that feeling the whole way.

08The time it takes for a song to be born
How long does it take from writing a song to performing it in VRChat?
WishWhen it's just my own work with no deadline, it often takes years. But when someone commissions me, I ask for the deadline and work backwards from it, so at the fastest I can finish in about a month and a half. That's without a music video, and it includes mixing and mastering. A lot of the piano I can program with a mouse, but I play the guitar and bass myself, so that takes time and physical energy. I work almost every day now, so I do this after work, and finishing at three or four in the morning has become the default. There's a part of making music that efficiency alone can't reach.
09The moment it reached someone
Are there words from listeners or fans that made you happy, or that stayed with you?
WishI've worked in bands and I've worked alone, but the thing that stayed with me most was hearing from someone involved that a person had started playing guitar after hearing mine. That was the first time I understood that my influence isn't zero. There's also a song I was commissioned to write, and the person who commissioned it performed it as a surprise for someone's birthday. The person who received the song was so happy that they cried. That was when I learned that something I made could make someone happy, and it has stayed with me.
10Growing company, and what comes next
Have you been performing with more people lately?
WishQuite a lot this year. Two people support me on guitar, Samp1e and Rucha. Apparently the response to the three of us has been good lately, so we've kept going together. We haven't decided on a unit name, so I don't know myself what will happen. Separately from that, playing guitar on other people's songs and having people work with me on commissions has increased a lot this year compared with before. Starting with everyone in Eyes of Truth, those long-standing friendships keep leading to more connections.
Is there anything you'd like to take on next?
WishI'd like a project band with a fixed run of about two years — bass and guitar members who would play my songs. If I'm going to do heavier shows from now on, it looks better as a band too. Drums would be difficult given the environment, but I do want to build a new band. Beyond that, I want to release my own album and do a release tour in VRChat. I want to show my songs live.
11To people about to start making music
Do you have advice for people who want to start making music in VRChat?
WishWhat I want to say is that believing in yourself and acting with courage matters enormously. Without courage nothing starts. I'm sure there are many people who think they can't do it because they're from a different country, or because Japanese is hard. But if you don't let yourself doubt it there, there's nothing you can't do. If you want to take on more, I'd say: start by moving under your own steam. I'm Korean and I've been able to work like this, so I'm sure everyone else can too. Go forward with confidence and with courage.

The word “time” came up again and again in what Wish said. To sing for the people who spend time that cannot be bought and cannot be recovered — that single point runs through everything in his work, across genres and across borders.
Even with nobody watching, give one person a hundred per cent. That stance isn't a clever way of getting by; it reads as a resolve reached only by someone who once gave music up. His closing words, “you are not alone,” may be the words he himself once wanted to hear from someone.

「한 번 포기했다」는 건, 어떤 좌절이 있었다는 뜻인가요?
Wish좌절도 있었는데, 일단 현실에서 포기하고, 거기서 멈췄던 거예요. 그런데 VRChat이라는 세계를 만나고 「할 수 있겠다」고 생각한 순간, 그때까지 해왔던 감각이 돌아왔습니다.

02동경했던 사람들 —— GACKT, 그리고 Eyes of Truth
음악을 시작한 원점이나, 영향을 받은 분이 있나요?
Wish지금은 Sifneos.라는 유닛에서 활동하고 계신 Diz 님이라는 분이 있는데, 프로이시고 예전부터 존경하며 큰 영향을 받은 분입니다. 제 음악의 여정 속에서 상당히 강한 이미지로 남아 있어요. 애초에 음악을 하고 싶다고 생각한 계기를 말하자면, 2009년쯤 한국에 왔던 일본 아티스트가 있는데 GACKT라는 분이에요. GACKT 님 덕분에 일본어를 배우자고 마음먹었고, 거기서부터 음악을 하고 싶어져서 음악의 길로 들어섰습니다.
VRChat에서 음악 활동을 시작한 뒤, 인상에 남은 라이브나 퍼포먼스가 있나요?
Wish지금이라면 Eyes of Truth라는 밴드가 있는데, 그들의 라이브가 정말 멋져요. 저를 동료로 대해 주셔서 늘 사이좋게 지내고 있습니다. 결성 전부터 알던 사람들이라, 이 네 명이 밴드를 한다고 들은 순간 대단하다고 생각하며 지켜봤어요. 처음부터 정말 대단해서, VRChat에서 Eyes of Truth를 이길 밴드는 없지 않을까 싶을 정도로 계속 봐 왔습니다. 제가 이분들과 관계를 맺어도 되는 걸까 하고 혼자 긴장하기도 하지만, 친구로서도 동료로서도 아주 소중한 관계를 맺게 해 주셔서 정말 감사한 마음으로 지켜보고 있습니다.
03가사에 담는, 전하고 싶은 마음
어떤 장르나 주제의 곡을 만들고 계신가요?
Wish최근 늘어난 건 록 계열, 애니록 계열, 록 발라드 계열이에요. 기본적으로 그 근처를 만들고 있습니다. 그것만이 아니라 여러 장르에 도전하고 싶어서 공부하면서 하고 있는데 꽤 어렵네요. 기본은 하드록과 록 발라드, 애니 계열 록이 제가 만드는 것의 중심이 되어 있습니다.
만드신 곡 중에서, 가장 들어줬으면 하는 부분은 어디인가요?
Wish제가 만든 멜로디도 그렇지만, 그 곡의 가사 내용을 봐 줬으면 할 때가 있어요. 작사를 직접 하다 보니 역시 이 마음을 전하고 싶다는, 그 마음을 헤아려 줬으면 합니다. 그것을 받아준 분의 마음을 알 수 있다면 정말 기뻐요. 제가 전하고 싶은 마음과 메시지를 전달하고 싶을 때는, 그 부분을 봐 줬으면 하는 마음이 듭니다.

04무대마다, 울리는 방식을 바꾼다
VRChat이라는 장소를 의식하며 곡을 쓰거나 편곡하는 일이 있나요?
Wish그대로 두는 경우도 있지만, 월드에 따라 라이브 음향을 바꾸기도 합니다. 갖고 있던 곡을 리메이크하고 싶어질 때는 직접 재편곡해서 내보기도 하고요. 여러 가지에 도전하고 싶다는 마음으로, 하고 싶다고 생각한 건 전부 해보고 싶습니다.
05소중한 시간을 써서 와 주는 사람을 위해
VRChat에서 라이브에 출연할 때 의식하는 것이 있나요?
Wish미리 무대를 보러 가서 소리가 어떤 식으로 흐르는지 확인하거나, 이 월드의 이 무대라면 어떤 옷이 어울릴까 생각하기도 합니다. 하지만 가장 많이 생각하는 건, 소중한 시간을 써서 여기 와 주신 분들께 어떻게 라이브를 해야 할까 하는 것이에요. 마음을 담아서, 제 감정을 어떻게 제대로 꺼낼 것인가를 중심에 두고 하고 있습니다.
Wish저는 라이브에 나가서 돈을 받는 일은 없을 거라고 생각해요. 하지만 시간은 돈으로 살 수 있는 것도 아니고, 되돌릴 수 있는 것도 아니잖아요. 그곳에 와 주시는 분들은 소중한 시간을 써 주고 계시니까요.

06라이브는, 다 함께 만드는 것
월드에 따라 레이저나 조명 기믹이 잘 갖춰져 있기도 한데, 그런 것을 적극적으로 쓰는 편인가요?
Wish쓰게 해 주신다면 기본적으로는 쓰고 싶습니다. 다만 라이브라는 건 저도 그렇지만 다 함께 만드는 것이라고 생각해요. 제 의견도 중요하지만 조명을 맡아 주시는 분들의 마음도 있을 테고, 곡에 따라 「아, 이건 아니네」라고 느낄 때도 있을 겁니다. 저만이 아니라 모두와 함께 만드는 라이브이기에 제대로 전해지는 게 아닐까 싶어요. 그래서 제 의견도 말하면서 상대의 의견도 제대로 들어보고 싶다는 마음으로, 요즘은 조명을 맡아 주시는 분도 무대에 선 저도 양쪽 다 좋게 느낄 수 있는 라이브를 하고 싶다고 생각합니다.
07단 한 사람에게라도, 100%를 전하고 싶다
눈앞에 살아 있는 관객이 있다는 점에서, VRChat 밖의 음악 활동과 다르다고 느끼는 점이 있나요?
Wish정말 그렇게 생각합니다. 반응해 주시는 분들을 보면서 늘 감사한 마음을 갖고, 그만큼 저도 열심히 해야 한다고 느끼는 일이 많아요. 저는 2020년부터 VR에서 음악 활동을 시작했는데, 그때와 지금을 비교하면 많이 달라졌다고 생각합니다. 처음에는 저처럼 해외에서 라이브를 하는 사람이 별로 없어서 조금 외롭다고 느낄 때도 있었어요. 그런데 지금은 여러 나라 분들이 일본 VRChat에서 라이브를 하게 되었고, 관객 반응도 굉장히 많아졌습니다. 그걸 보면서 매번 이번이 마지막이라고 생각하고 제대로 라이브를 하고 싶다고 마음먹는 계기가 되고 있어요.
Wish결국 관객이 와 주지 않으면 시작되지 않는다는 건 있습니다. 하지만 제 철학적인 부분을 말하자면, 저는 봐 주는 사람이 없더라도 제가 보여주고 싶은 것, 제대로 해나가고 싶은 것은 보여주고 싶어요. 단 한 사람뿐이라도 그 사람을 위해 라이브를 하고 싶다는 마음을 계속 갖고 하고 있습니다.

08곡이 태어나기까지의 시간
곡을 만들고 VRChat에서 선보이기까지 어느 정도 시간을 들이시나요?
Wish마감이 없는 저만의 작업이면 몇 년씩 걸리는 일이 많습니다. 하지만 의뢰를 받아 만들 때는 마감을 듣고 거기서 역산하기 때문에, 빠르면 한 달 반 정도에 끝냅니다. 이건 뮤직비디오 없이 믹스와 마스터링까지 전부 포함한 기간이에요. 피아노는 마우스로 찍을 수 있는 부분도 많지만 기타와 베이스는 직접 치기 때문에 거기서 시간도 체력도 듭니다. 지금은 거의 매일 일을 하고 있어서 일이 끝난 뒤에 작업하는 식이라, 새벽 3시 4시에 끝나는 게 기본이 되어 버렸어요. 효율만으로는 만들 수 없는 부분이 음악 제작에는 있습니다.
09누군가에게 닿은 순간
청자나 팬에게서 들은 말 중 기뻤던 말, 인상에 남은 말이 있나요?
Wish밴드로 활동하던 때도, 혼자 활동하던 때도 있었는데 가장 인상에 남은 건 제 기타를 듣고 기타를 시작했다는 사람이 있다고 관계자분께 들은 일입니다. 제 영향력이 0은 아니구나 하고 처음 알았어요. 그리고 의뢰를 받아 만든 곡이 하나 있는데, 그 곡을 의뢰해 주신 분이 누군가의 생일에 서프라이즈로 라이브를 한 적이 있어요. 그 곡을 받은 분이 아주 기뻐하며 울어 주셨습니다. 내가 한 일로 사람이 기뻐해 주는구나 하고 알게 된 계기라서 인상에 남아 있어요.
10늘어가는 동료들과, 앞으로의 도전
최근에는 함께 무대에 서는 분도 늘고 있나요?
Wish올해는 꽤 많아요. 기타로 서포트해 주는 두 분이 있는데 Samp1e 님과 Rucha 님입니다. 최근 그 셋이서 하는 반응이 꽤 좋다고 해서 계속 함께하고 있어요. 유닛 이름은 아직 정해지지 않아서 앞으로 어떻게 될지 저도 아직 모르겠지만요. 그것과는 별개로, 다른 분의 곡에 기타를 치게 해 주시거나 곡 작업 의뢰를 함께 해 주는 사람도 예전에 비하면 올해는 상당히 늘었다고 생각합니다. Eyes of Truth 여러분에게서 시작된 오래된 인연에서 점점 연결이 늘어가는 느낌이에요.
앞으로 도전해 보고 싶은 것이 있나요?
Wish프로젝트 밴드로서 2년 정도 기간을 정해 두고, 제 곡을 연주해 줄 베이스와 기타 멤버가 있으면 좋겠다고 생각합니다. 앞으로 격렬한 라이브를 한다면 보기에도 밴드로 하는 편이 좋으니까요. 드럼은 환경적으로 어렵다고 생각하지만, 새로운 밴드를 만들고 싶다는 마음은 있어요. 그리고 제 앨범을 내고, VRChat에서 앨범 발매 기념 투어를 하고 싶습니다. 제 곡을 라이브로 보여주고 싶으니까요.
11이제부터 음악 활동을 시작할 사람에게
앞으로 VRChat에서 음악 활동을 하고 싶은 분에게 조언이 있을까요?
Wish제가 말하고 싶은 건, 자신을 믿고 용기를 가지고 활동해 나가는 것이 아주 중요하다는 겁니다. 용기가 없으면 아무것도 시작되지 않아요. 나라가 다르고 일본어가 어려워서 못 한다고 생각하는 분도 많을 거라고 생각하지만, 거기서 스스로를 의심하지만 않으면 못 할 것은 없습니다. 더 여러 가지에 도전하고 싶다면 우선 스스로 움직여 보는 건 어떨까요, 라는 이야기를 전하고 싶어요. 한국인인 제가 이렇게 활동할 수 있으니, 여러분도 분명 할 수 있을 겁니다. 자신감과 용기를 가지고 활동해 나가셨으면 좋겠습니다.
취재 후기
Wish의 말에는 「시간」이라는 단어가 몇 번이고 등장했다. 돈으로는 살 수 없고 되돌릴 수도 없는 시간을 써서 와 주는 사람을 위해 노래한다——그 한 점이 장르도 국경도 넘어 그의 음악 활동 전체를 관통하고 있었다.
아무도 보고 있지 않아도, 한 사람을 위해 100%를 전한다. 그 자세는 결코 요령 좋은 처세술이 아니라, 한 번 음악을 포기해 본 사람이기에 다다를 수 있었던 각오라고 생각한다. 「너는 혼자가 아니니까」라는 마지막 말은, 그 자신이 언젠가 누군가에게 듣고 싶었던 말인지도 모른다.
